Introduction of Coconut Farming in India

In India, most farmers prefer to grow a large number of coconuts on their coconut farms. Coconuts become the main source of income for Indian farmers. Coconuts are used in hair oils, cosmetics, soap, fuel, medicine, etc. Also, the mattresses, brushes, mats, etc., are prepared from coconut husk. Most people also like to eat coconut flour, coconut milk, and coconut oil made from coconut.

Climate and Soil Requirements -  Red sandy loam, alluvial, and laterite soils are required to grow coconuts. This soil provides the necessary nutrients, drainage, and aeration with a minimum depth of 1.2 meters and a high water-holding capacity. 

Land Preparation - Land preparation depends on various factors, such as the topography of the land and soil type.

Pattern of Plant Spacing - There are many plant spacing patterns of different varieties, such as tall, dwarf and hybrid. 7.5 x 7.5 m with 175 plants/h is perfect for tall variety, whereas 8.5 x 8.5 m  is perfect for hybrids.

Planting - July is the perfect season to grow coconut.  First of all, dig the pit of 3 X 3 X 3 ft. Now, at the height of 2ft, fill the pit with FYM. Put coconut seeds at the centre of the pit. You must arrange two layers of coconut husk at the bottom of the pit. 

Taking Care of Young Palms - You must take care that your palms must get enough water to grow. Initially, they require proper care to become fruit-bearing. 

Intercropping - Choose the crop based on climatic conditions, soil type and irrigation facilities.

Weed Control - Remove the weeds from the pits by doing weeding. It is necessary to develop coconut. 

Harvesting - It takes It takes 11 to 12 months for coconuts to grow properly. Accordingly, different regions may have different harvesting times.  Food items such as coconut oil are prepared from 11-month-old nuts. 

Some of the popular coconut-producing states are Karnataka, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Naidu, and Andhra Pradesh.
